How to choose a wreath size for a Vermont farmhouse door

The first question at the bench is not which wreath — it is which size. A wreath that is too small disappears on the door; one that is too large crowds it. The right wreath covers roughly two-thirds of the visible door face, with breathing room for the bow and the trim.

Read the door first

Measure the visible door panel — the flat face, not the frame. A standard front door in a Vermont farmhouse is 36 inches wide. For that door, a 22-inch wreath is the standard: full, present, and never crowded.

If the door is wider, or the trim is generous, step up to a 26-inch. A double door or an entry wall asks for a 30-inch. Beyond that, you are in lodge and barn territory — 36-inch for a barn door or storefront, 48-inch for an estate entry that means to be read from the road.

Leave room for the bow

A wreath is not just the greens. The bow, the cones, and the winterberry all take space at the face. A wreath that fills the whole door leaves no room for them to breathe, and the composition reads as crowded. Two-thirds of the door, with the bow clear of the trim, is the house rule.

When in doubt, go up

A slightly larger wreath reads as generous; a slightly smaller one reads as timid. If you are between two sizes and the door can take it, choose the larger. See the Care & Sizing guide for the full size chart and outdoor notes.
